The state certified recycling plant buys all California Redemption Value (CRV) items and specializes in non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminum, brass and stainless steel. They buy from individuals and companies alike, such as manufacturers who buy aluminum in sheet or roll form. Whether having cutoffs, damaged materials or obsolete materials, such businesses can cash in their recyclable materials at Continental Recycling. Continental bids on scrap from government agencies, such as the military – (especially Camp Pendleton) and they also buy from smaller recyclers. Scrap is then shipped oversees or sold to local mills. The Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties is a private, not for profit comprehensive blood center established in June 1951. For more than fifty years the Blood Bank has been helping to save lives by connecting donors and patients through the gift of blood throughout San Bernardino and Riverside counties. In addition, a number of employee and community blood drives are held daily throughout the year.
Every eight minutes someone needs a blood transfusion-cancer patients, accident victims, premature infants, people with chronic diseases. Reach Out West End has been around for almost 40 years, but its mentoring program has been active for about 10 years, according to Mentor Coordinator, Bernadette Galvan. This year she hopes to get 50 new mentors for at-risk middle school students from the Ontario/Montclair School District and the Upland Unified School District. Bernadette said that friendship is the most important requirement of mentors and especially encourages senior citizens to apply and share their “old school values” and life experience with kids. Reach Out’s Student Assistance Program works with schools to find students who need assistance the most. Kids are often referred through school counselors and may have academic, social or home issues. Most are from broken homes. Bernadette likens mentored students to flowers that bloom. “They start opening up,” she said. “They end up doing better in school. In a lot of cases they’re starting to form goals. They see there is hope. These mentors are really there to empower them and help them to live a successful life.” Other Reach Out programs include the eight session Tobacco Awareness Program, the Healthy Teens Program, which teaches nutrition, hygiene and smoking cessation and PC1000, a last resort program for drug offenders.
